§ 58. Civil Service—Board Created; Composition; Appointment of Members; Compensation and Terms of Members; Existing Board Continued.

  • A civil service board for the City of Orlando, Orange County, Florida, is hereby created. Said board shall consist of five members who shall be appointed by the governing authority of said City of different vocations who are not employed officially or otherwise by said City. Said board shall elect annually one of its members as chief examiner and he shall also serve as secretary. The board may appoint assistants to secretary as may be necessary. Said board may at any meeting require the presence of the chiefs of police and fire departments or either of them. No member of said board shall receive any compensation for his services as such board member. No member of the police or fire departments, the mayor-commissioner or a commissioner of said City shall ever be appointed as a member of said board.

    Immediately upon this Act becoming effective, the terms of departmental members of the existing civil service board shall terminate and come to an end; simultaneously the mayor shall cease to be a member of said board and a successor with the qualifications prescribed by this Section shall be appointed for the unexpired term of the mayor. Except as herein provided to the contrary, the existing civil service board shall continue to function pursuant to their present appointment. Upon the expiration of the terms of members of the existing civil service board and the term of the successor to the mayor on said board, but excluding departmental members, successors shall be appointed for a term of three years and this period shall be the term of all future members of said board.
